Portheras Cove

Area

A west Cornwall adventure would not be complete without a foray down to Portheras Cove, situated along one of the wildest stretches of coastline in the UK. Sat between Pendeen and Morvah, its not the easiest beach to find, but its steep sandy beach, cascading waterfall and dramatic cliffs make it well worth the hunt. Areas of the beach were once out of bounds due to the wreckage of the cargo ship, Alacrity, which ran aground in August 1963 whilst carrying a load from Swansea to Brussels. This left an array of shrapnel buried under the sand but the wreck has since been removed and the beach is once again safe to walk on although we recommend keeping shoes on. Swimming here is not advised as the steep shelving beach can create a strong under-tow. An additional beach appears at the base of a slipway at Boat Cove during low tide. The north-east facing cove delivers unrivalled shelter from the wind during the unrelenting south-westerly winds that can batter the county. Just offshore lies the Kenidjacks, an intimidating outcrop of semi-submerged rocks that seem to enclose the cove. Out to the west of the cove is Pendeen Lighthouse and can be reached by taking the short walk along the South West Coastal Path.
