Porthchapel

Area

Porthchapel is a must-go-to beach for anyone thinking of traversing West Cornwall's rocky shores. It's south facing orientation and high towering cliffs means that it can give a welcome break from the prevailing south-westerly winds that often batter the coasts of Kernow. Porthchapel is so-named due to the remains of a medieval church located approximately 30m from the main footpath to the beach. Connected to the ancient chapel is a natural spring known as the St. Levan Holy Well and can be accessed by climbing the granite steps near the meandering footpath. The flight of 50 granite steps was recently unearthed following excavations carried out in 1931 by the Reverend H T Valentine. Access can be difficult and requires a certain level of climbing finesse but is manageable for most able-bodied explorers. The steep shelving beach means that Porthchapel is subject to strong currents and only strong swimmers should attempt to enter the water.
